my The last time NXT TakeOver was at Brooklyn, history was made with the NXT debut of Shinsuke Nakamura, and the first female main event match featuring Bayley and Sasha Banks. This year's TakeOver at Brooklyn had a lot to live up to. Not only with how successful last year's event was, but it had to set the tone for WWE SummerSlam. Here are the match results and overall grades for NXT TakeOver Brooklyn II.
No Way Jose vs. Austin Aries
No Way Jose entered NXT TakeOver with a conga line full of fans, which I thought was fun, just like the match itself. A fun match with lots of great spots. Aries seems like he will be the guy in NXT to get other wrestlers over. Which he has done flawlessly so far. Aries gets the win, but gets a surprise visit from Hideo Itami setting up the eventually Aries vs. Itami rivalry.
Winner: Austin Aries
Ember Moon vs. Billie Kay
I think I found my newest favorite wrestler! Ember Moon vs. Billie Kay was a surprisingly great match. Not because they are women, but because I wasn't sure Billie Kay was going to be able to hold her own. She proved me wrong and I'm starting to like her as well. But Ember Moon might just be NXT's answer for the increasingly large hole in their women's division. I can already see Ember Moon taking on the likes of Bayley & Asuka.
Winner: Ember Moon
Bobby Roode vs. Andrade 'Cien' Almas
GLORIOUS!! I'll admit I knew nothing about Bobby Roode until he started popping up on NXT and I definitely had no idea how glorious of an entrance he would have at TakeOver. The match itself was decent enough. Both Roode and Almas showed why they belong in NXT. Going forward I'm not sure where Almas will fit into the growing clutter of top tier fighters all wanting a shot at the NXT title.
Winner: Bobby Rude
The Revival vs. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa (NXT Tag Team Championship Match)
The Revival and Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa are two teams that I've never been a big fan of, but after their match on the Crusier Weight Classic, Johnny & Ciampa became one of my favorites to watch. The Revival is another story. I could never understand why NXT was giving them the push they were getting, that was until I saw this match. Like all Revival matches, it started off slow and in the 3rd act the action started to heat up with great spot after great spot. In the end I grew to appreciate both teams a little more.
Winner: The Revival
Bayley vs. Asuka (NXT Womens Championship Match)
Last years match between these two at Dallas left me with a sour taste in my mouth. It wasn't the ending we wanted. We wanted to see the ultimate underdog, Bayley, go up against unbeatable Asuka! Hopefully this year's match at Brooklyn would be what we asked for. This match was great. For the first time we saw Asuka pushed to her limits as Bayley gave everything she had. Bayley has a presence about her, you can feel the passion she has every time she fights. I really hope once Bayley gets pushed up to the main roster, WWE will realize what kind of talent they have and won't waste it.
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe (NXT Championship Match)
The instant impact of Shinsuke Nakamura will go down in the history books. Nakamura has beaten big opponents ever since he debuted in NXT. Sami Zayn, Austin Aries, and former NXT Champion Finn Balor, all have fallen to Nakamura, and Samoa Joe looked to be next. Both athletes always put on amazing performances and this match was no different. Hard hits and close calls made for one of the best matches of the night. Much like Bayley, I'm interested to see how WWE uses Joe in his eventual call up to the main roster.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura
