It seems like every year there is a science fiction film that strives to be the defining film of its genre. Last year the Martian took the title and this year's Arrival looks to be the film to take the crown in 2016. Based on the short story "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, Arrival tells the story of earth's first contact with beings from outer space as twelve UFOs land in random locations across the world. Linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams), theoretical physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), are recruited by the United States military to make contact with the aliens and ask them one question..."What is your purpose?"
Arrival touched on the current state of not only our country but our relationship with the world. Many times during the film I found myself thinking if this happened in today's world, the results that unfold in Arrival could very likely be what would occur in real life. The entire cast is solid, with Amy Adams obviously being the standout here. I've seen a lot of films with Amy Adams and only now do I see how great of an actress she really is. With Oscar season approaching don't be surprised if Adams is nominated for another academy award.
Overall Arrival is one of the best films of the year. Awesome cast, amazing score and a pretty good ending makes this a must watch for movie fans.
